Abstract:
Recently TU Delft, PRE Power Developers and Last Mile Solutions completed their research on Vehicle to Grid fast charging and now the first solar powered bidirectional Vehicle to Grid (V2G) has been presented. This research was based on the idea that electronic transport is only environmentally friendly when the energy for this is also generated environmentally friendly as well. The researchers developed a smart power module that makes it possible to charge a car with energy from solar panels directly. This also bypasses loss of conversion (in total 19%).

The V2G Vehicle to Grid Module is a bidirectional AC-DC converter. This means energy can be transferred from the battery to the power grid (Vehicle to grid). This charger can handle four different power flows:

1.      From solar panels to electronic transport
2.      From electronic transport to the power grid
3.      From power grid to electronic transport and
4.      From solar panel to the power grid.

The V2G 10 kW charger is a smart integration between an MPPT solar module and an EV charging module. These modules can be used modular, which makes it possible to place them in a parallel way, so they can reach a combined power of 150 kW. The integrated solution requires fewer components, which means that the power density is three times higher. That will result in much lower costs. An efficiency of 96% is reached for full and halfway charging by using silicon carbide and quasi-resonant technology.

The philosophy and design and the application of the module will be addressed in the lecture. Right after this meeting there will be a network lunch at the PRE stand.
